Los Angeles

In Los Angeles, what you pay a nanny depends on where you live, down to which side of a city line you're on. A-List matches LA families with nannies we've personally vetted, guided by a founder who spent 20 years as a nanny. Here's what to budget for.

Finding a nanny here

What Nannies Earn

The average starting rate in Los Angeles is $27.52/hr, with experienced nannies averaging up to $33.06/hr. That's about $57,200 a year full-time. Nearby areas range from about $22/hr (Pomona) to $32/hr (Arcadia).

Minimum wage

LA has several overlapping rates. California's $16.90/hr is the floor; these areas pay more:

  • West Hollywood: $20.25
  • Pasadena: $18.57
  • Unincorporated LA County and Santa Monica: $18.47
  • City of Los Angeles: $18.42
  • Malibu: $17.91
  • Other cities: $16.90 (state)

The City of LA and unincorporated county rates change every July 1.

Household employers must pay the highest of the federal, state or local rate where the nanny works.

Nanny vs. Daycare

Average daycare prices in Los Angeles County:

  • Infant: $15,638 at a center, $17,304 at a home daycare
  • Toddler: $13,434 at a center, $14,008 at a home daycare
  • Preschool: $13,690 at a center, $13,492 at a home daycare

Prices swing widely across LA. A survey of nearly 1,000 Los Angeles daycares found full-time infant care ranging from $390 to $3,024 a month (Brightwheel), so Westside families should expect well above the county average.

Daycare prices are per child, per year. One nanny cares for all your children, so the math shifts toward a nanny as your family grows.
